» America’s Provocateurs Are at the Mercy of the Barbarians

France and the United States are culturally dissimilar, and, by choice, the French enjoy a different relationship with the state than do Americans. The rights involved here, however, are universal — ripe to be claimed by all. In consequence, we have to ask in sorrow whether it is really too much to suggest that it should have been as easy for the targets at Charlie Hebdo to get hold of a firearm and a means of carrying it as it was for the barbarians that killed them. We have to ask, too, whether it is really too much to ask that our provocateurs here at home be permitted to give themselves a fighting chance without having to get down on one knee and beg their employees in City Hall for access to a right that they never agreed to relinquish in the first instance. Should I tomorrow elect to trade my stapler for a Sig Sauer, in violation of the city’s laws, I would end up in Rikers Island. If I do not, I will be left at the mercy of barbarians who believe that it is appropriate to execute people who are rude on the Internet. Like so many people in America, I ask little of the government. But I do ask this: For goodness sake, get out of the way, and give us all a fighting chance.

» Company To Sell Fake Gun For Those Who Want To Appear To Be Armed

“The sole purpose of these devices is to bridge the gap between hardcore everyday gun toting enthusiasts and those who are less willing to have a firearm in their home.”

It’s the same thing

» The deafening silence of the anti-war left

The Washington Post’s Dana Milbank recently made the trek to a rather sad anti-war protest outside the White House that was attended by a meager 22 true believers.

“It was the latest display of how Obama has neutralized the left,”

» Glorified Bastards

For Western elites, Ahmadinejad is preferable to Hirsi Ali, the Castros to Cuban dissidents.

The new presidential sarcasm is, in effect, “He may be a bastard, but at least he’s an anti-American bastard.”

One of the most peculiar pathologies of Western elites is carrying on this apparent romance with non-Westerners who dislike the West, while spurning those who admire it. The feminist pro-Western critic of Islam, Ayaan Hirsi Ali, was recently disinvited from speaking at Brandeis University. Earlier, Columbia University had welcomed the Iranian president, Mahmoud Ahmadinejad, an unhinged anti-Jewish and anti-American theocrat. Apparently hating America made Ahmadinejad the more interesting speaker; liking America made Hirsi Ali suspect and certainly less romantically revolutionary. How odd that for campus communities, being the victim of forced genital mutilation makes one less sympathetic than a man who had ordered the deaths of female supposed adulteresses.

» ‘No-Go Zones’ in France Restrict Citizens & Allow Islamists to Conquer Territory Without Firing a Shot

non-Muslim French citizens are forbidden from entering “no-go zones” throughout France, where Sharia law rules and radicals recruit new followers openly …

“The efforts of Islamists like the Muslim Brotherhood or al-Qaeda to recruit off the streets of the no-go zones is not something that’s hidden in the shadows. It’s actually very open. It’s accepted. People just sort of go along and let this be the status quo.”

It’s mind-boggling that any sovereign nation would allow a group of people whose radicals espouse the idea of attempting to overthrow Western society to form basically autonomous enclaves within its borders.

» Liberal Reporters BLAST Obama For Snubbing French at Their #JeSuisCharlie Freedom March

Jeffrey Goldberg, The Atlantic: “It would have been nice to see the country whose birth was midwifed by France send its leader to stand with France today.”

Yea, well, it would be nice if the country whose birth was midwifed by France actually had a leader.

Fareed Zakaria, CNN: “Why no U.S. leader at Paris rally? Isn’t this why God invented vice presidents?”

However, seems to me, that any rally in France that doesn’t march through the muslim ‘No-Go Zones’ is a waste of time.

» The Blasphemy We Need

If a large enough group of someones is willing to kill you for saying something, then it’s something that almost certainly needs to be said, because otherwise the violent have veto power over liberal civilization, and when that scenario obtains it isn’t really a liberal civilization any more.

(If all you have to fear is a religious group’s fax machine, what you’re doing might not be as truth-to-power-ish as you think.) But if publishing something might get you slaughtered and you publish it anyway, by definition you are striking a blow for freedom, and that’s precisely the context when you need your fellow citizens to set aside their squeamishness and rise to your defense.

“… an interesting thought experiment underway …”

» The 4 Biggest Hypocrites Praising Free Speech in Paris Today

Perhaps most surprising of all in these circumstances, Ireland has had “blasphemy” as a criminal offense on its books since 2009. Already one Muslim has threatened legal action against any Irish publication that reprints Charlie Hebdo’s front-page depiction of the Prophet Muhammad. Blasphemy is punishable with a fine of up to €25,000 ($29,500), but there are plans to hold a referendum to abolish it.
Blasphemy is defined by the Irish as “publishing or uttering matter that is grossly abusive or insulting in relation to matters sacred by any religion.” It doesn’t sound like the drafters of this law would have much time for the people at Charlie Hebdo.

» In Nigeria, New Boko Haram Suicide Bomber Tactic: ‘It’s a Little Girl’

A girl perhaps no more than 10 years old detonated powerful explosives concealed under her veil at a crowded northern Nigeria market on Saturday, killing as many as 20 people and wounding many more.

The blast inflicted devastating damage on shoppers at the Monday Market in Maiduguri, the shopping hub in a city that is at the heart of the Boko Haram insurgency. The explosion, witnessed by dozens of people, represented a new tactic in the Islamists’ campaign with their decision to use perhaps their youngest-ever suicide bomber.

White House press secretary Josh Earnest announced that the Obama administration would prioritize fighting Islamophobia in the aftermath of the terrorist attack on Charlie Hebdo in France. Never mind that most Westerners aren’t Islamophobic, but rather GettingShotInTheFaceForExpressingMyOpinion-Phobic.

» The Party of Snobbish Elites

In the short term, liberal elites had little clue how the ramifications of their own unworkable ideology always fell on distant others. Before one can damn fracking, guns, traditional religion, and tract suburbia, one has to have a high income that allows for expensive energy, exorbitant college tuition, and $500-a-square-foot housing. Obamacare, with its higher average deductibles and premiums, is far more of a burden than a bargain for the working class.

In contemporary straitjacket Democratic orthodoxy, there is no concession that a white male mechanic could face more economic difficulty than a Latina journalist, African-American federal employee, or Asian dentist. Lockstep obedience to the mantras of diversity, affirmative action, and preferential hiring does not allow that race can be increasingly divorced from class.

» Obama’s math doesn’t add up on free tuition, critics say

President Obama’s plan to provide free tuition to community college students has landed with a thud among number crunchers, who argue that overburdened states cannot afford to fund the White House idea.

As a political strategy, “free tuition” is as appealing a message as Obama could devise heading into his final two years in office. But when pressed on funding the measure, it gets messier for the White House.

» Retired climate professor admits global warming will not destroy Earth

… refuses to go along with many of his scientific peers who he says have urged him to be in lockstep with former Vice President Al Gore – “the drum major in the parade denouncing global warming as an unmitigated disaster.”
… “I’m now retired, so I have no scientific career to protect by spreading lies.”

He said he thinks dire global warming predictions are really all about lassoing federal research funding and votes.

“Too many (the majority) of climate research scientists are quite willing to prostitute their science by giving these politicians what they want,”

» John Kerry, Meteorologist and Massachusetts Mountebank

Too many believe in the imaginary threat of man-made climate change, thinking that it provides them moral superiority and intellectual weight. Truth is, it makes them look silly, like high schoolers trying too hard to be cool, rather than the deep thinkers they want to be recognized as.
