» Running Out of Options, Portugal Turns Right

In Portugal, this year’s elections mark the beleaguered country’s most significant turn to the right since the seventies. Of course, the right is not exactly the same as the right in the U.S., but it is the rightward-most option available.
While giving all your power to unelected and unaccountable leaders is one of those ideas so profoundly stupid that only the very well educated and conventionally intelligent could believe in it, many accepted the root idea that all which stood between Portugal and competitiveness was its lack of size. If Portugal joined with the other countries of Europe, all of Europe would show America a thing or two.

Let’s play “What if President Bush said this?”
» Hillary Clinton to Libya skeptics: ‘Whose side are you on?’

“The President does not have power under the Constitution to unilaterally authorize a military attack in a situation that does not involve stopping an actual or imminent threat to the nation.”
– Senator Barack Hussein Obama. December 20, 2007.

“We are currently doing everything we can to bomb, strafe and use missiles to carry the rebels into power in Libya. We want them to win. We just don’t know who they are.” Hillary Rodham Clinton.

“Most of you know that I opposed this war from the start. I thought it was a tragic mistake,” Obama said to a crowd at the Springfield, Illinois town square on Feb. 10, 2007.

“Today we grieve for the families who have lost loved ones, the hearts that have been broken and the young lives that could have been. America it is time to start bringing our troops home. It’s time to admit that no amount of American lives can resolve the political disagreement that lies at the heart of someone else’s civil war. That’s why I have a plan that will bring our combat troops home by March of 2008.” Barack Hussein Obama.

» Gun Owners of America Calls for Dissolution of ATF

ATF has a long history of death and destruction. Waco was never adequately addressed at the time. Indeed, ATF got a bigger budget the next year. Innocent people such as David Olofson were convicted with perjured testimony. The Bureau has never published a manual detailing how they determine what is, or is not, a machine gun.

I chose that paragraph for excerpt for a reason: it’s a summary of most of what is important to know about ATF. They don’t publish because doing so would slow them down too much. They like having the ability to change policy on a daily basis. What defines a machine gun today may not be what they want to define it as tomorrow. If they wrote down definitions today, they might have to wait an extra day to launch a storm-trooper attack on a private home or business.

» The Purposeful Flooding of America’s Heartland

Some sixty years ago, the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers (USACE) began the process of taming the Missouri by constructing a series of six dams. The idea was simple: massive dams at the top moderating flow to the smaller dams below, generating electricity while providing desperately needed control of the river’s devastating floods.
The stable flow of water allowed for the construction of the concrete and earthen levees that protect more than 10 million people who reside and work within the river’s reach. It allowed millions of acres of floodplain to become useful for farming and development. In fact, these uses were encouraged by our government, which took credit for the resulting economic boom. By nearly all measures, the project was a great success.

But they failed to include an important factor in their calculations: the growing influence of the radical enviro-pests.

But after about thirty years of operation, as the environmentalist movement gained strength throughout the seventies and eighties, the Corps received a great deal of pressure to include some specific environmental concerns

No big deal? Very Big Deal
» Commander In Chief Misspeaks About Soldier Killed in Afghanistan
Obama: Jared Monti, was the first person who I was able to award the Medal of Honor to who actually came back and wasn’t receiving it posthumously.

The problem is, Jared Monti was killed in action in Afghanistan, on June 21, 2006. He was awarded the Medal of Honor posthumously, September 17, 2009. President Obama handed the framed medal to his parents, Paul and Janet Monti. He and the First Lady comforted them in the Oval Office following the ceremony.

The Medal of Honor is a big deal – in all respects. If it was a big deal to Obama he would have remembered correctly.

One of the comments sums it:

If it’s not useful to him politically, it didn’t happen.

Either that, or it’s not worth getting right.

» More on the President and the military

Today, we get a glimpse of what really amounts to total disinterest — he can’t even be bothered to get his facts right. Keep in mind that Obama actually met, face to face, the person he was trying (and failed) to refer to — and clearly forgot this hero as soon as he left the room.

What a pathetic Commander in Chief. Our troops deserve so much better.

» OJ Simpson to admit to murders?

Don’t expect those invested in Simpson’s professed innocence to apologize for their participation in race-baiting on his behalf, even if Simpson actually does confess to the murders, a guilt that practically everyone who actually reviewed the evidence with any intelligence assigned to Simpson from the beginning. The only people who argued otherwise did so for their own purposes, not from a sense of justice for the victims of the crime — and the families that have had to live with the cruelty of both the deaths and the public reaction to them.

» Pakistanis Tip Off U.S. Enemies – Again

The CIA had discovered location of two ‘factories’ in Waziristan used to make bombs and IEDs to be used against American forces in Afghanistan. To avoid any problems with the Pakistanis they informed them of the location of the bomb factories and then monitored the area with satellite and unmanned drones to see what would happen.

Within a day or so after the Pakistanis received the intel, the CIA watched the jihadis leave taking all their weapons explosives and tools with them. Only when the goodies and the terrorists were safely removed did the Pakistani military visit each site…where they of course found nothing.

» Obama’s Transparent Political Calculation is Unsettling

I have the advantage of having served a president during wartime. And whatever faults one might be tempted to lay at the feet of George W. Bush, he never allowed politics of the Obama kind to infect his decisions. I know of what I speak. In September 2006, with the midterm elections approaching and the war of Iraq floundering, Senator Mitch McConnell, then the Republic whip, asked to see the president alone in the Oval Office. “Mr. President,” McConnell said, “your unpopularity is going to cost us control of Congress.” When President Bush asked McConnell what to do about it, McConnell said, “Bring some troops home from Iraq.”

Four months later, Senator McConnell got his reply. President Bush – who faced far more ferocious political opposition to the war than Obama ever has – not only did not withdraw troops; he increased them while embracing a strategy that came to be known as the “surge.” And he blocked every attempt at a premature withdrawal.

There are many factors that explain why the Iraq war turned around, but the fortitude of President Bush surely ranks high among them. That quality looked impressive then; it looks even more impressive now.

» ICE Agents: Obama Administration using agency policy for backdoor amnesty

First there were whistleblowers, agents from the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives, who sounded the alarm on the deliberate and deadly gun running operation called “Fast and Furious,” in which the Obama Justice department intentionally allowed Mexican drug cartel intermediaries to purchase guns at licensed U.S. firearms dealers and then cross the border–with these guns resulting in the alleged murder of a U.S. Border Patrol Agent Brian Terry and countless Mexicans.
Now there are whistleblowers from ICE, U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement, a part of the Department of Homeland Security, who desperately need your help. The National ICE Council representing approximately 7,000 ICE agents, officers and employees is calling on the public to take action to stop the Obama Administration’s backdoor secret policies “to win votes at the expense of sound and responsible law enforcement policy.”

» The psychology of war and warriors

Apropos that not so coincidental timing, the conventional wisdom is that the troops, grateful to return home, will cast their votes for the Democrat who made it so. I wonder if that’s true.

Obama has consistently proven himself profoundly ignorant of the military mindset, something that’s true for most Leftists. Leftists are feral fighters, not principled fighters. While feral fighters will fight quite ferociously if threatened (which is why Leftist leadership works mightily to keep its followers in a blind panic, as with global warming), what Leftists really want is for the threat to stop affecting them personally.

Principled fighters, however, are willing to take ultimate risks for a cause greater than themselves. It’s a much more altruistic approach to war, and one that sees people willing to make great sacrifices for a final goal that may not even benefit them directly.

Because Dems are feral fighters, they assume all wars are Vietnam. Back then, the draft and the upheaval in America meant that way too many Vietnam troops didn’t believe in their mission, and were desperate to have a political change that would get them home. These are the kind of troops Dems recognize.

“Obama is making a good political calculation at the cost of a strategic miscalculation.”
