Lives Saved by Shutdown

I want to dabble in a little headline news fakery. It’s all the rage these days so why not?

The trick is to present a small thruthy fact in such a way that it will be interpreted to mean the exact opposite of what it really means. Or to mean something completely irrelevant or unconnected.

That’s two tricky little sentences right there, ain’t they?

Example: (Fake)Newsweek article: SHUTDOWN: THREE PEOPLE DIE AS NATIONAL PARKS LEFT LARGELY UNPATROLLED. And no, I don’t recommend clicking to read it. It’s a piece of anti-Trump crap and I’ll excerpt the important parts ratchere …

…shutdown began on December 22 …

Three people have died as a result of accidents in U.S. national parks since the shutdown began …

The deaths took place within a week of each other.

National Park Service spokesman Jeremy Barnum told the publication that seven deaths in total occurred in national parks since the shutdown, with four of those killed believed to have taken their own lives.

He said that on average, six people a week die in the national parks system

I emthickened some of the words for reference as we do a little math exercise.
According to the National Park service, via Newsweek, the normal death rate in national parks is six every seven days. That’s 0.85 people per day. (6/7=.85).
Except during this shutdown when seven people died within 15 days. Which is 0.36 people per day. Shutdown began Dec. 22 and the Newsweek article is dated Jan 6, that’s 15 days.
So what this all means is that the shutdown of the federal government has saved 0.49 lives per day – in our National Parks alone!
Thank you Mr President! you da man.

Oh, by the way, another part of the article:

… reported the Washington Post.

Faker reporter Tom Porter of Newsweek took some fake news from Washington Post as gospel and repeated it.
