» Crony Capitalism

To understand the pertinence to America of events in Greece, notice General Motors’ most recent misbehavior. A television commercial featuring CEO Ed Whitacre demonstrates the institutional murkiness and intellectual dishonesty that result when the line between public and private sectors disappears.

In the commercial, Whitacre says GM has “repaid our government loan in full.” Rep. Paul Ryan, R-Wis., noted that GM used government funds to pay back the government: It “simply transferred $6.7 billion from one taxpayer-funded TARP account to another.” The government still owns 60.8 percent of GM’s common equity, and the Congressional Budget Office projects that the government will lose about $34 billion of the $82 billion of TARP funds dispersed to the automotive industry.

Under crony capitalism, when government and corporate America merge, both dissemble.

Now American taxpayers also own a little bit of a small nation. They provide the U.S. contribution of 17 percent of the assets of the International Monetary Fund, which is giving Greece $39 billion

» Hollywood Newspeak: Islamists Good, Americans Bad, It’s a Bum (W)Rap

The Great Dream Factory is now an Actor in History.

Why-oh-why are Western filmmakers refusing to name reality, refusing to name the evil over which we must triumph or die? There are so many Hollywood movies that show America and the CIA as totally evil … Needless to say, on camera, in Hollywood, the Arabs and Muslims are portrayed as charming, sympathetic, totally innocent victims

» Lay claim to Constitution — or lose it?

If “we the people” surrender interpretation of the Constitution to those in power, then we have abrogated our responsibility as sovereign citizens. Each and every person in this country should know and understand the Constitution. Otherwise our country is the moral equivalent of the church in the Middle Ages when only the priests knew what was in the Bible, kept hidden in the mysterious code language of Latin, and doled out to the flock in dribs and drabs as the priesthood deemed appropriate.

It is time that “we the people” take back the Constitution as well. Indeed, the fact that people in this country don’t understand their responsibilities as the guardians of the Constitution is a damning indictment of our educational system. Can we really be so naive that we are willing to accept the pronouncement from “on high” about what the ruling law of the land proclaims instead of studying it for ourselves and making our own decisions?

» Thinking about Mexicans

Something is very wrong when illegal aliens, Mexicans and others from south of the border, feel empowered to march in the streets of our nation’s cities to demand instant citizenship. They have no right to be in the streets. They have no right to be in America.

Something is very wrong when America makes all manner of accommodation with what is essentially an invasion by millions of people who are here illegally.

Politically, the current administration and the Democrat Party want to depict Republicans as racists because they want the Constitution and other applicable laws enforced. We need to see through this deception; a position designed to enhance their political power by luring Hispanics into their party by offering amnesty.

» Who Gets the Gag? Elena Kagan’s First Amendment Problem

Writing for the majority, Justice Anthony Kennedy described the law Kagan defended as “unlawful” and an illegitimate attempt to use “censorship to control thought.”

As dean of Harvard’s law school, Kagan was no less eager to stifle free speech. She barred military recruiters from the Harvard Law School’s career office because she opposed the military’s so-called “don’t ask don’t tell” policy for homosexuals, which she called “a profound wrong—a moral injustice of the first order.”

» Kagan: Those Who Can’t Do, Teach

Obama’s administration is filled with people with sketchy views who haven’t done anything substantial in the private sector. Kagan has been a teacher or government official nearly her entire life. According to President Obama, this is the type of wisdom and experience we need on the Supreme Court.

» The Land of the Free or the Home of the Slave?

For the left, the United States Constitution has always been a dangerous document, because it limits the power of government. Their power. And for all that the left inveighs against power and authority, it only does so because its leaders are driven to be the ones in power and wielding that envied authority. The left’s model is not democracy, but aristocracy. The aristocracy of the revolutionary faithful. Back to the days of the French Revolution, the radicalism of the left sought to replace inherited aristocracy with ideological aristocracy. Instead of an elite that ruled over the masses because their descended from nobility, they wanted an elite that ruled over the masses because it had the passionate idealism to fight for social justice.

» Tide of PR battle turns against public employee unions

Americans love it when underdogs bark back at bullies. In this instance, the bullies are the New Jersey public employee unions and their protectors in the MSM. Every time a budget crisis erupts in any part of the United States, the old media dutifully picks up the refrain of the entrenched liberal elites: teachers unions, prison guard unions, the Service Employees International Union and others with many fingers deep into the public dish
